about

With his furious and critically acclaimed quartet debut, Elephants Marching On, released by the Swiss label Unit Records in September 2021, drummer and composer Jonas Sorgenfrei set an optimistic and metaphorical motto for the current times relating to his theme and musical interpretation. In 2022, he dedicated his second release to the transparent sound of a trio without a harmony instrument: the Saxophone Trio. The compositions of the album, Moods, reveal the ever-changing emotional states and situations in everyday life and beyond.

"In the multi-colored, atmospheric compositions, which often oscillate between written-out and freely improvised passages, the interplay is dense and organic. The focus is on the melodic character of the pieces and the spontaneous, free interplay in a reduced, transparent formation.
The homogeneously warm sound of the band, with the fine-nerved, extremely agile but never intrusive, wonderfully pulsating playing of bandleader Sorgenfrei and Matthias Akeo Nowak's earthy, full bass sound, provides the foundation on which two outstanding soloists take off with inspiration."
Ursus Bachthaler, 2022

In his third release as bandleader, Sorgenfrei presents both Elephants Marching On and Moods in a new guise in a Live -CD.
Recorded for “Deutschlandfunk” in November 2022 at the Loft in Cologne, the quartet, around the rhythmic foundation Nowak and Sorgenfrei, features the exceptional Rosenheim saxophonist Florian Trübsbach. They are joined by Cologne-based guitarist Philipp Brämswig, whose unique musical interpretation gives the band a multi-layered sonic facet.
The Live-CD presents 6 pieces from the pen of Sorgenfrei, in which the band dives deep into the compositions and their sometimes melancholic atmosphere, revealing in their interpretations a firework of virtuosity and breathtaking interplay. Anyone who appreciates live concert atmosphere, captured in a wonderfully produced radio recording, should not miss the Live-album of this impressive quartet.
